As a father of 2 in this sometimes cruel world we live in, I fully recognize there is nothing, NOTHING funny about bullying.
However, small-town lawmen are a different story.
I think the “It Gets Better Campaign,” what it stands for and the message it sends are all important things to instill in today’s youth. So, apparently, are many schools and school districts who are doing their best to relay those important messages. Sometimes, however, the messenger is just ill-prepared to deliver them.
From a good buddy of mine who is now a high school history teacher.
Youll love this…Police officer comes into one of my classes today to talk about the anti-bullying crap, and I swear this is true. Spends some time talking about weapons and fighting and the normal stuff, then moves into cyber bullying and so on and so forth. Then talks about how if someone is bothering you, there is always someone to turn to, and somewhere to go. You dont have to bare the burden on your own. He references the kid from Rutgers who jumped off the GWB for being outed on the internet, and I swear he said this…
“Guys if you are homosexual and you are being bullied there are people who will listen, and places you can go. Does anyone know anything about San Francisco? They have a rather large gay community, you could always go someplace like that.”
Mind you, these are freshmen, 14-15 year olds…I love my job, just another page in my forthcoming memior, “The things I heard while I did my job” – The ramblings of a high school history teacher.
